Most business owners are very capable and knowledgeable about the most technical and detailed aspects of their individual business; however many of them do not have even the most basic grasp of marketing. It is essential that business owners have a basic understanding of marketing in order to help them grow their business into a more profitable one. Here are a few guidelines to help.

Determine and identify the target market and its customers. One way to look at this is to think of the market as a crowd that is starving and in need of your services and product. Then you provide that crowd with the services and products they desire.

A unique selling proposition is one of the more foundations of a marketing plan. As a business owner, you need to know and state what makes you different from your competition. You need to find a market problem to which you can provide a unique solution. For instance, one unique proposition that has recently entered the market is home delivery of groceries via internet order systems, for those people who just don’t have enough to shop.

Understand and determine how your products and services will be distributed. You need to decide if you will use sales people, independent contractors or electronic services. You don’t need to choose one single solution; use multiple choice for a more visible marketing plan.

Use advertising the reach your potential customers. Explore all your options including print and broadcast media, as well as the Internet.
